The mesmerizing charm of industrial lava lamps
Introduction
Industrial lava lamps are a fascinating creation of technology and design. The intriguing combination of liquid lava-like substances and colorful lights creates a mesmerizing visual experience. These lamps were first introduced in the 1960s and gained immense popularity as a decorative item. In this article, we will explore the history, composition, and working of industrial lava lamps.
History
The idea of creating lava lamps was developed by Edward Craven Walker, an English accountant, in the early 1960s. He noticed a peculiar behavior of a liquid substance in a homemade egg-timer, which later became the basis for the design of the lava lamp. Craven Walker founded a company called Crestworth Ltd. and began producing and selling lava lamps under the brand name of “Astro Lamps.” The lamps became a cultural icon of the swinging 60s and were seen as a symbol of the psychedelic era.
Composition
Industrial lava lamps consist of a transparent cylindrical bottle filled with two immiscible liquids, namely, wax and a clear or colored liquid, usually water or oil. The bottle’s base comprises a heating element, usually a bulb, that generates enough heat to melt the wax at the bottom of the bottle. As the wax melts, it rises to the top of the bottle, taking the shape of colorful and intriguing formations, resembling lava. The liquid at the top of the bottle cools down and falls back to the bottom, starting the cycle again.
Working
The heating element at the base of the bottle creates heat, causing the wax to melt and rise through the liquid. The hotter the lamp gets, the more fluid the wax becomes, creating a more active and vibrant lava flow. The wax’s movement is random and is influenced by changes in temperature and interactions with the surrounding fluid, resulting in different and unique formations in each lamp.
Design and Decor
Industrial lava lamps come in various sizes, shapes, and colors. Some are designed with a metallic finish, while others have transparent casing, providing a glimpse of the internal workings. Lava lamps are excellent decorative items that can add charm and vibrancy to any room or office. They can be used to create a nostalgic atmosphere or add a touch of fun and whimsy to a dull space.
