This unique factory showroom showcases beautifully
handcrafted iron chandeliers, lamps, tables, beds,
mirrors and more. Visitors to the showroom are
delighted to discover they can observe the creation of
these artistically inspired pieces right on the premises.

Located in Mesa, the Iron Factory is an offshoot of
Design Lighting Products, a company that originally had
its start in the Scottsdale Airpark. Founded in 1979,

by Sheldon and Ronna Nitzky with partner Dina Petruzzi joining in 1986,
Design Lighting Products continues to experience tremendous growth
and change. The firm is the most extensive manufac-
turer of its kind in the state of Arizona. In addition, the
company has become the premier manufacturer of iron
products in the lighting industry with distribution
throughout the United States and internationally.

“Our diversity keeps the business both challenging and
fun,” says President Sheldon Nitzky. Sheldon, who is
every bit an entrepreneur, grew up in the lighting indus-
try. His family still owns an electrical wholesale business

in Philadelphia which opened in 1919. Before moving
to Arizona, he ran his own sales agency as an indepen-
dent manufacturer’s representative. He also owned and
operated several lighting showrooms. Sheldon has the
ability to identify and maximize the potential of business
opportunities all around him.
“Since starting Design Lighting Products, we have
developed three other companies. They are 2nd Ave.
Great Stuff, Inc. which manufactures iron furniture and
accessories; All-State Metals which manufactures deco-
rative metal parts, and now, the Iron Factory which dis-
tributes and wholesales iron lighting, furniture and
accessories in a beautiful showroom setting. All of this is
done in 75,000 square feet of manufacturing space that
is soon to expand to 150,000 square feet.”

The Iron Factory has the unique ability to fabricate
products from the primitive to the sophisticated because
of its vast array of metal working equipment. “We have
everything from a trip hammer built in 1901, to state-
of-the-art computer guided plasma cutting equipment,”
comments Sheldon. “Meanwhile, it is very exciting to turn a conceptual

idea into a finished tangible product in a short period
of time. This ability stimulates new ideas from all of
our people on a continuing basis.

“Many bright, young people come to us for a
career, not just a job, so we want to give them the

opportunity to grow. “Our plant manager, Calvin
Corder, started with us six years ago in our Assembly
Department. Through his initiative, energy and drive,
he has succeeded and grown within the company.
“We foster partial ownership in our organization
based on the extent of the individual’s involvement.”

Meanwhile, Design Lighting Products feels a strong
sense of responsibility to Arizona and its economy.
Today, the company employs over 135 people with
future growth intended through company training
programs, improved benefits packages and by
strengthening the company culture within each of the
four companies.

Ronna Nitzky, who heads up the Contract Sales
Division for the company, adds to this philosophy.

“We have created an environment that fosters a car-
ing attitude toward every customer.”

This attitude pervades throughout. From the cus-
tomer service representatives who interact directly
with the customer, to those in the organization who
never meet a customer, such as the ladies who
painstakingly check each crystal for flaws before they
are hand packaged. Or the blacksmith who hand
forges that perfect scroll in 110 degrees in the mid-
dle of July. These are all examples of their attention
to total quality service.

An interesting aspect quickly observed is the number
of females who play strong roles throughout all four
companies. In addition to managing Contract Sales,
Ronna also oversees Custom Sales. She is the liaison to
nearly 100 sales representatives throughout the United
States and abroad. Dina Petruzzi executive vice presi-
dent of Design Lighting, is also president of both 2nd
Ave. Great Stuff, Inc. and the Iron Factory, while she
handles the role of creative director. Tammy Guck is

manager of Worldwide Contract Sales. Eileen Conto
manages All-State Metals, and Laurie Smith is assistant
plant manager of Design Lighting. “One of our welders is
a woman,” comments Ronna. Diane Seely adds an artistic
and feminine touch to the development of new products.
“We stress the importance of treating each person
as an individual,” continues Ronna. “Everyone plays
an important role within the organization. I’m often
told by people who visit the factory that the people
working here look happy; they’re smiling. They care
about their work, and this is even reflected in our
clean factory environment.”
Besides being a capable and clean factory with a posi-
tive atmosphere, this is a very busy factory! Design
Lighting Products has become a major player in the
hospitality industry.

The firm is responsible for high profile Valley projects,
such as the downtown Scottsdale Streetscape project,
the Arizona Center and the Pointe Resorts, as well as
many nationally recognized chains like Mariott, Best
Western and Hilton Hotels. Recent international pro-
jects include Fukishima and CBC Takayama hotels in
Japan; the El Conquistador resort in Puerto Rico and
the Casa Blanca resort in St. Martin. New business is
also developing in London, Russia and the Middle East.

“A great deal of our success lies in our ability to
respond,” says Dina Petruzzi. “Since we are a prime
manufacturer (that means we build from raw materials),
we have the uncommon ability to build a product in a
timely fashion because materials are readily available to
us. The other part of the equation is our creative staff
that can develop products not only for the markets we
are already selling to, we can also create new products
that allow us to develop new markets.”Simply being

aware is the key. We must absorb everything around
us regarding style trends in fashion and home furnishings.
Likewise, all societal and eco- nomic changes affect how we
act upon new market potentials,” says Dina.
What becomes quickly apparent is that these three
partners in the firm have struck up a very unique rela-
tionship. Each brings a certain energy and perspective to
their common focus. In fact, their newest venture, the
Iron Factory, is certainly a result of this common focus.

The Iron Factory is unlike any other showroom in the
Valley with 5,700 square feet showcasing the finely
crafted iron products that are produced in the adjoining
manufacturing facility.

To create a “total look,” the Iron Factory also offers
fine upholstered furnishings, pine armoires and hutches,
plus an eclectic assortment of accessories. The extensive
line of merchandise is displayed in beautifully appointed
vignettes. Each with a different style theme including
sophisticated country, formal European, casual elegance,
garden setting and lakeside lodge. Local designer Dixie
Lovejoy worked alongside Dina Petruzzi to develop this
extraordinary showroom.

“We think of this collection of merchandise as a
lifestyle line.” says Petruzzi. “It suits many tastes. One
can create a look that will evolve and change as their
lifestyle and tastes evolve and change.”

An important aspect of the Iron Factory showroom is
its use as an educational vehicle for Design Lighting’s

and 2nd Ave.’s sales representatives and distributor
accounts. “We are hosting our distributors from all over
the country. Along with our representatives, they learn
-what it takes to build our handcrafted products,” contin-

ues Petruzzi.

Essentially, what the Iron Factory offers is choice and
value. Items from the standard line may be modified, or
the in-house Design Department will create a custom
piece to suit special needs. A customer may choose one
of 32 standard finishes or the staff will develop a custom
finish to complement a decor.

How does one even begin to make choices when
faced with so many possibilities? With the help of savvy
professionals on staff such as Mary Vaugier, showroom
manager, and Michele Ferrier, showroom coordinator,
preferences are determined and selections become a
comfortable decision. Ms. Vaugier recently relocated
here from Los Angeles where she worked in the
L.A. Furniture Mart for seven years. Some of her past
clients include actress Angela Bassett and actor Leonard
Nemoy. Ms. Vaugier also worked on homes in Century
Woods, a luxury home development in Century City,
which included two residences for Carol Burnett and
the home of Walter Annonberg. She also worked on the
winter and summer villas for Prince Sattam of Saudi Arabia.

Ms. Ferrier has a multi-faceted background in sales,
management and design, while her knowledge and
enthusiasm about the firm’s handcrafted products will
certainly steer you in the right direction.

The Iron Factory is sure to become a destination
showroom, visited by sophisticated clientele throughout
Arizona and beyond. Mary Vaugier or Michele Ferrier
can be reached at 464-4300 for a personal tour and
consultation. Outside Arizona call 1-800-704-9283. A
visit to the Iron Factory is truly an adventure. Now one
of Arizona’s best kept secrets is no longer a secret.

Kitchen Design In A Day?

Can an entire kitchen really be designed and built in just one day? That was the challenge presented to local builders at this years Maricopa County Home Show held on the grounds of the Arizona State Fairgrounds. Their 4th Annual Kitchen Design Competition showed off the the best in full-kitchen remodel displays. Licensed remodeling companies showed the latest trends in cabinetry, appliances, countertops, fixtures, lighting and flooring.

Pentimento was thrilled to be a part of Stardust’s Builders Kitchen Vignette at the Maricopa County Home Show. This amazing new kitchen design by Gretchen Palmer, Allied ASID and her team including Pentimento’s very own Chris West in just one day!
